Universal Opens its Direct Representation in Georgia Side-stepping Russia

World’s one of the hugest music published Universal Music Publishing Group opened the direct representation in Georgia  and joined as a member with the Georgian Copyright Association.

The Universal’s direct representative in Georgia is a Georgian company GMI Rights Management (GMI), which established the direct representation agreement.

The opening of direct representation is a first ever precedent in Georgia and obtains the particular significance at the background of existing political and economic relations with Russia.  Up-to-date, the world leading music publishers were covering the Georgian territory via Russia based representation offices which was causing certain inconveniences for the users mainly, as they had to pay the royalties to Russian representatives, while Russian mediation resulted in a higher price for a music product.

This case of Universal, is a first and giant step done in favour of avoiding the Russian influence and proves that Georgia is becoming an interesting country in the field, as it will serve as an example for other big players at the world music market.

Universal has 47 representations in 45 countries worldwide and manages the copyright of such artists as: Coldplay, U2, ABBA, Adele, Bee Gees, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Eminem, Selena Gomez, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and many others.
